legitimately good human being
By S. Shafley
I'll be honest here, unlike so many other Amazon reviewers. I've known Matt Kroczaleski, personally, since the late 90s, met him at in a calculus class. I have a very high opinion of him and think he is a genuine, legitimately good human being. He's someone I consider a very good acquaintance, if not a friend, in real life.

Over the years we've had lunch together, shot the s*** at powerlifting and strongman meets and on the Arnold Classic expo floor, and swapped an email now and then.

This is what you get with this book:

1. A brief bio...unlike another "Encyclopedia" type book that came out recently, Matt keeps it short and sweet. He tells you who he is, where he came from, and what he believes in in a succinct manner, getting it out of the way. He illustrates the kind of drive and dedication you need to get to where you want to go.,

2. Tips on the big three. Matt breaks down the bench, squat and deadlift. Most of this stuff you might already know if you are a powerlifter, but if you are just starting to lift, these are some pretty decent breakdowns of these lifts and gives you things to consider as you get stronger and better at them. After each section he gives you a 16 week cycle to try.

3. The low down on the Kroc row, from Kroc himself.

4. Workout routines. He gives you several routines, from beginning to advanced, and these are solid routines that he's used himself and that he also uses with the training clients he takes on. There are several of these, and they are all good if you apply them at the correct time in your own training history.

Overall, I enjoyed this book, and was pleased I purchased it, basically sight unseen, from Amazon when it popped up in my feed.

I just want to make the point that the reviewer, Pat, below, clearly didn't understand what kind of book he was getting. Matt has always been a staunch advocate of barbell based strength training, it's what's made him what he is today. The nutrition section is very basic, and based on how most people eat when they are lifting weights

As an aside, Pat: If you can do it, basic barbell lifting and a few sessions of low impact cardio each week is coupled with a low calorie, probably lower carb diet is what is going to help you out the most. Check out Tracy Rifkin's book "The Swing"...she's done an awesome job of losing weight and keeping it off, and you may find her minimalist approach valuable.

Solid Training Guide
By Amazon Customer
Pretty good overall! The technique stuff is basic, and that's the only thing dropping it from a 5-star to a 4-star for me. I would have liked to see some more info beyond the elementary basics as far as setup and completion of the lift. Possibly some pictures too? The programs are solid, very detailed, and the writing is good and well-edited. Overall very worth the $ to hear from a guy as experienced and accomplished as Kroc!

I'm goig to give it 5 starts because it is a great book with lots of good workouts
By Snappy
Well, I'm goig to give it 5 starts because it is a great book with lots of good workouts, and the writing, layout and format are awesome. But, it's not exactly what I was expecting. I thought it was going to be full of Rocky IV crazy workouts (implied by the cover). I'm not going to take off a star for being wrong. Maybe I'll write that one!

This new edition of the leading authority on international aspects of sale of goods provides clear, comprehensive and detailed analysis of the subject. The unique dual coverage of contracts under English law and the CISG is a valuable benefit for those interested in all types of sale of goods contracts, including the sale of commodities such as grain and oil. The detailed commentary provides analysis on decided cases as well as on standard form contracts which
represent evolving trade practice.

In addition to matters of contract law, the book considers relevant property law, most notably addressing those issues arising out of the use of documents of title, such as marine bills of lading. The rights and duties of buyer and seller are explained in depth, and the relationship of sale contracts to other contracts, such as charter parties and letter of credit contracts, is rigorously examined. The book deals with issues of frustration and force majeure, the passing of property and risk,
and remedies.

New to this edition are three separate chapters on the UN Convention on the International Sale of Goods (CISG) covering formation, performance and remedies for non-performance of the contract.

The law is explained in the context of commercial practice making the book an ideal reference source for practitioners, scholars and postgraduate students.

Very disapointing, save your money
By Persson Johan
[Warning This is Rather Long …]

This is a book looking for a purpose and target audience and fails miserable at both. I don’t like being so critical about a book since regardless whether I like it or not the author has put in many hours and he is after all a fellow human being with feelings and emotions. But I claim this is not the authors fault, he has probably done what he thought of as a good job. It is the editor-in-charge that is to blame. He/she should have killed this book long before its completion or just hired another competent author.
It is so disappointing seeing a large publishing house like AW/Pearson being swept away in the flood of poor Android books which never should have been published. This book severely lacks an executive editor which should have pulled the plug on the book project early on.
I’m tired of seeing pointless Android books rehashing the developer docs without adding any new real information or insights and just having some pointless filler chapters to make the minimum number of pages.

Now to the specifics to motivate my claims.

This book appears to give patterns for the professional developer so it is safe to say from this that the target audience are people with experience that are looking for other points of views and possible pick up a gem or two or to find examples of best practices in a fast evolving Android world.

I already make a living from bespoke Android programming but I’m not that arrogant that I don’t think I can learn more and there are also areas of the Android system I have hardly ever touched. So with this background I expected to read some interesting discussions on what pattern to apply as one professional to another and see how other experienced developers tackles standard architectural issues or tip on 3:rd party libraries to ease once work.

My suspicion started already in chapter one and two which claims to go through the development environment. In chapter one I laughed the first time. In a section named “Version control” the author states that it is important to use VC (dooh…) and then presents SVN, Git and Mercurial as examples. Here one had hoped to see some information about pros/cons and some analysis. But SVN is around four short paragraphs with a summary that states that you can do branches, versioning (!!), tagging and merge tracking. In one word each.
Git gets three paragraphs, with an equal useful(!) summary. The chapter concludes with two paragraphs on Mercurial.

These are just good examples of the pointlessness of this book. Anyone not familiar with VC is not the target audience of this book and if the reader is not then these chapters doesn’t help even the length of a Higgs Boson too choose a VC nor does it give any useful information at all. For example, why were these particular three chosen (and really, would it be a good professional advice for a new project to be setup with Mercurial?)

The rest of the chapters give no more information here than what you can read on the intro page in d.android.com. Not a single mention about using the (for example) “gradlew” when he discusses that you can use the command line nor any mention about useful “adb shell” commands. When I give in-house Android courses I actually force developers in the course to only use the command line tools the first two days to become familiar. In my experience this is always needed sooner or later and also takes away the “black magic” behind the scene in Android Studio.

In the next chapter named “Testing and debugging” I laughed the second time. All the chapter says is that developers do unit testing on there own modules before the team starts integration tests. There is no useful information about for example how to actually set up a unit test environment with AS or how to use Junit. There are some “random” code which is of absolutely no use. Too little for anyone not familiar with the topic and trivial for anyone remotely familiar. There is some information in regards to integration testing but again, the tools referred to has better online help in d.android.com. Some information about “Monkey” but no solid information. Not even a single mention of Robotium for example.

The Android activity lifecycle is much more complex and has more gotchas than what most beginner/intermediate books gives the impression of (or perhaps many authors are even aware of). However, the developer docs have come a long way and I actually like the latest reincarnation of the visual illustration of the lifecycle. But the author of this book apparently disagrees with me. He has his own, and in my view, bad visual illustration of the lifecycle without clearly indicating the different states but just state transitions. Why not just re-use a well known illustration and just give credit to the dev-docs instead of trying to create a poor version himself?

One important skill as a professional developer with project deadlines in terms of patterns is what 3:rd party libraries to use. While everyone has their own pet-libraries there are a few that are commonly used. For example, Buttercup which together with some suitable AS plugins takes away some of tedious and error-prone boiler-plate code we all have to write. The only third party library mentioned in this book (unless I missed it) is “glide” in the chapter on Android TV and then only because it comes as standard with the AS wizard.

The following chapters up to chapter 9 are equally useless. For anyone supposed to be a professional developer (or even anyone who have managed there first “Hello Android” program) There are no useful patterns to take home. Again there is no more (or actually a lot less) than can be found on the developer site. For example the chapters on Views. This is basically just a list of some of the views and three (or so) sentences on each view, the RecycleView is described with two very short paragraphs. Who is this chapter written for? Who is the intended audience? As a developer you know the views exists an if not there is not a single shred of useful information or gotchas or best practices here to help you over and above the developer docs. For example, there is not a single mention about the intended lack of SimpleCursorAdapter variant for RecycleView and the integration with ContentProviders which is a common question even from senior developer when they are switching over to RecycleView.

From chapter 10 there is a small shift in that here the author tries, but fails, to give some example on how to parse XML. Again, if you know this there is a lot lacking and, quite frankly shows a lack of understanding and structure. If you don’t, this chapter at best directs you to the Android documentation for the XML parsers. Here would have been a good chance for some discussions on, say, JSON vs XML. But again, as is common with this book lacks any analysis or actually any patterns.

In the chapter about networking the Author mentions the Volley library (but not, say, OkHttp-library) and as an example actually uses an AsyncTask to do network operation. Here there are different opinions but in my opinion this is a poor use for AsyncTask nor is there any discussions about the potential drawbacks and problems using AsyncTask. Nor is there, in the entire book, any discussion on the other various methods in Android for asynchronous processing which I would definitely expect to see in a book aimed at showing “patterns for professional developers”.

From chapter 11 and onwards some more code is used as illustration. The chapter about Bluetooth and NFC (13) is the only chapter that contains some real information in the entire book. It suddenly seems like the author can write about something he actually knows something about and he wants to get into the nitty gritty details about BT handshake and the protocol differences between legacy BT and BT Low Energy (BLE). It is almost as someone else had written this chapter since the amount of details given here is nowhere to be found in any other chapters. However, I don’t have the technical expertize in BT protocol details to see if anything vital is missing. However, given the big holes in the areas I do know it would be a positive surprise if this was fully covered. One could here question the editors choice of why this area is described in such details when arguable other areas that will affect many more developers is passed over with a single sentence.

The chapter about optimization (18) is again pointless. In any serious discussion about memory and garbage collection I would expect to see a discussion about the use of, say, WeakReference as a best practice pattern when storing a reference to an activity in, say, a Handler to avoid OOM issues and other type of memory problem related to the activity life cycle.

The remaining two chapters are again fillers about Android for TV and how to deploy an app on Google Playstore.

The word plagiarism is hard but it comes very close to mind in the chapter on TV. It starts with “The best way to start an Android TV project is to use Android Studio…”. The rest of the chapter runs the Studio project creation wizard and gives us details on what buttons to press in order to create a new project in AS (and this is in the end of a book targeting professionals …). He then explains the created manifest file. In sentence by sentence. When it comes to the description of dependencies the author, when explaining why RecycleView is imported, gives us the important tidbit of information that the “The RecycleView is used for large lists..”.

There was a time when a title by Addison Wesley was almost a guarantee for solid piece of work. I feel old remembering that.
Please AW/Pearson can you make this right by donating the money I paid for this book to a registered charity of your liking and retract this book and apologise.

Even the title is misleading

A book called Android Development Patterns only dedicates 5 pages to the MVC pattern, and even that is poorly written and explained.

An Introduction to the World's Oceans (College Ie Overruns), by Keith A. Sverdrup

An Introduction to the World's Oceans, Tenth Edition, is an introductory oceanography text intended for students without a background in mathematics, chemistry, physics, geology, or biology. It emphasizes the role of basic scientific principles in helping understand the processes that govern the ocean and the earth. To keep the text as current as possible, the authors conduct their own research and examine other findings such as analyzing satellite data and large-scale oceanographic programs. From this vast amount of data, they select interesting, relevant, and understandable examples that illustrate contemporary principles of oceanography.

An Introduction to the World's Oceans places greater emphasis on the physical and geological aspects of the oceans than on the chemical and geochemical properties, because the latter disciplines require more specific background knowledge. An ecological approach helps integrate the biological chapters with other subjects. Students are encouraged to look at oceanography as a cohesive and united discipline rather than a collection of subjects gathered under a marine umbrella. As with all previous editions, the authors continue to make each chapter stand as independently as possible, so that professors can assign chapters in the order that best suits their classrooms.

Phishing for Phools: The Economics of Manipulation and Deception, by George A. Akerlof, Robert J. Shiller

Ever since Adam Smith, the central teaching of economics has been that free markets provide us with material well-being, as if by an invisible hand. In Phishing for Phools, Nobel Prize-winning economists George Akerlof and Robert Shiller deliver a fundamental challenge to this insight, arguing that markets harm as well as help us. As long as there is profit to be made, sellers will systematically exploit our psychological weaknesses and our ignorance through manipulation and deception. Rather than being essentially benign and always creating the greater good, markets are inherently filled with tricks and traps and will "phish" us as "phools."

Phishing for Phools therefore strikes a radically new direction in economics, based on the intuitive idea that markets both give and take away. Akerlof and Shiller bring this idea to life through dozens of stories that show how phishing affects everyone, in almost every walk of life. We spend our money up to the limit, and then worry about how to pay the next month's bills. The financial system soars, then crashes. We are attracted, more than we know, by advertising. Our political system is distorted by money. We pay too much for gym memberships, cars, houses, and credit cards. Drug companies ingeniously market pharmaceuticals that do us little good, and sometimes are downright dangerous.

Phishing for Phools explores the central role of manipulation and deception in fascinating detail in each of these areas and many more. It thereby explains a paradox: why, at a time when we are better off than ever before in history, all too many of us are leading lives of quiet desperation. At the same time, the book tells stories of individuals who have stood against economic trickery--and how it can be reduced through greater knowledge, reform, and regulation.

Robert J. Shiller, Co-Winner of the 2013 Nobel Prize in Economics

Winner of the 2016 Gold Medal in Economics, Axiom Business Book Awards
Honorable Mention for the 2016 PROSE Award in Economics, Association of American Publishers
One of The Independent's Best Economics Books 2015
One of LinkedIn's Best Business Books of 2015
One of BusinessInsider.com's Best Business Books of 2015
One of Legal Theory Bookworm's Books of the Year 2015
Longlisted for the FT & McKinsey Business Book of the Year 2015

"[Akerlof and Shiller] want to go far beyond behavioral economics, at least in its current form. They offer a much more general, and quite damning, account of why free markets and competition cause serious problems. . . . They are intellectual renegades. . . . Akerlof and Shiller make a convincing argument that phishing occurs because of the operation of the invisible hand, not in spite of it. . . . [This] extraordinary book tells us something true, and profoundly important, about the operation of the invisible hand."--Cass Sunstein, New York Review of Books

"No question, Phishing for Phools is a radical book. It may also be a radically important one."--Fortune

"I highly recommend this, even for those who might disagree with the authors' outlook. Their case studies are illuminating, and their insights on the way markets work are fascinating. When you consider the sorry state of the personal finances of the median working age family in the United States today, it's hard to disagree with their central thesis that our current system isn't working properly."--John Reeves, The Motley Fool, USA Today

"Entertaining, readable and provocative."--John Lanchester, London Review of Books

"A needed call for skeptical economics and financial mindfulness."--Nature

"Using compelling examples of flawed decision making from advertising, health care and personal finances, the authors identify our rational weak spots and arm readers with the ability to resist manipulation."--Scientific American Mind

"As you would expect, it's a very clearly written book with tons of examples. And it makes a simple and powerful point about the fragility of the normative, welfare economics conclusions economists tend to draw."--Diane Coyle, The Enlightened Economist

"Akerlof and Shiller present convincing evidence of how tobacco, pharmaceutical, and liquor companies and politicians weasel a chapter of their own into our life stories, abusing the mutual storytelling--with all its signs and wonders--that is elemental to our humanity."--Peter Lewis, Barnes & Noble Review

"With accessible language and everyday examples, Shiller and Akerlof are taking on the powerful belief that aside from a few blemishes (like widening income inequality) only fools advocate interfering with the free market."--Chris Farrell, Minneapolis Star Tribune

"The book's central message is certainly thought-provoking."--The Economist

"Phishing for Phools forswears technical language, making this book accessible not only to economists but to consumers and policymakers. It should make everyone rethink the unfettered free-market model."--Brenda Jubin, Investing.com

"It's a very clearly written book with tons of examples. And it makes a simple and powerful point about the fragility of the normative, welfare economics conclusions economists tend to draw."--Enlightened Economist

"Its critique of conventional economics is more powerful and comprehensive--and more paternalistic--than that of Animal Spirits."--Carlos Lozada, Washington Post

"[Akerlof's and Shiller's] insight is a powerful one."--Economist.com's Buttonwood blog

"Akerlof and Shiller show that unregulated free markets systematically make people worse off by providing the unscrupulous with opportunities to take advantage of the unwary."--Adam Bouyamourn, The National

"[Phishing for Phools] serves the important purpose of holding up a mirror to economics, a subject that prides itself on (supposedly) being the most sophisticated of all the social sciences. Economics may look sophisticated on paper, but it is often completely out of touch when it comes to reality."--Victoria Bateman, Times Higher Education

"The book offers powerful support for a skeptical view of free markets, but it's also a helpful guide for consumers to avoid getting ripped off in the course of making important purchases."--Chris Matthews, Fortune

"An interesting and entertaining new book by George Akerlof and Robert Shiller looks at the role of trickery in market economies. Phishing for Phools explains that sellers are often out to deceive you, and shows that this isn't an occasional glitch in the market system so much as an intrinsic and pervasive trait. . . . Phishing for Phools aims to help readers understand their psychological weaknesses, so that the phishermen can be phended off more ephectively."--Clive Crook, Bloomberg View

"Where Akerlof and Shiller break new ground is the sweeping application of the idea of the 'phishing equilibrium' to finance. . . . The style of Phishing for Phools will be familiar to fans of Shiller's work: light on jargon and pacy enough not to outstay its welcome. The authors tell some engaging tales."--Robin Harding, Financial Times

"[A] surprisingly readable yet highly original book . . . the evidence and explanations marshaled by Akerlof and Shiller are compelling and they have profound political implications . . . an enlightening read by two expert economists. It should be required reading for policy makes and for consumers (which is to say, all of us. . . . [An] important, sobering book."--Oliver Kamm, The Times

"Narratives in this impressive book tell how to avoid being tricked by means of better enforcement and being told of pending scams. . . . [O]ne of the few titles dealing with fraud in the marketplace."--Library Journal

"The authors provide is a . . . unifying theory for all kinds of trickery, an economic explanation for why deception is so rampant. It takes many of our scattered findings about humanity's blind spots--both psychological weakness and a lack of perfect information--and weaves them into a comprehensive framework that has the potential to be devastating for free market fundamentalists."--Victoria Finkle, Washington Monthly

"Its central idea is an important one and merits more attention."--Emran Mian, Prospect

"Phishing for Phools is packed with examples--including subprime mortgages, pharmaceuticals, political campaigns, gym memberships, credit cards, cars and cranberry juice labels--of the pervasiveness of deception and manipulation in our economy and the price it exacts on individuals and the society at large."--Glenn C. Altschuler, Tulsa World

"This interesting book is written by economists mainly for economists, but it includes many entertaining stories about business behavior (and some disturbing ones), told in lively and accessible prose."--Foreign Affairs

"The book is easy to read and relate; and more importantly will make you start thinking of the number of times you have been phished. The list would be endless!"--Madan Sabnavis, BusinessWorld

"This unusual book offers a simple but challenging corrective to the assumptions made by most mainstream economists. . . . Probably not every reader will agree with every interpretation or argument--but every reader will find something that enlightens and stimulates."--James Ledbetter, Yale Alumni Magazine

"This book was enjoyable to read, and the expertise and knowledge of the authors are abundantly evident."--William Holcomb, PsycCRITIQUES

"Bob and George urge us to slap Adam Smith's invisible hand when it steals from everybody's cookie jar. They ask us to ponder those situations, economic or political, that provide particularly tempting opportunities to phish for phools. . . . Penetrating insights rendered in accessible prose."--Marlene Lang May, Commonweal

From the Back Cover

"In an entertaining and lively account, Akerlof and Shiller show that while the pursuit of profits may lead to products that enrich our lives, it may also lead to manipulation and deception. Much of recent innovation has led to products that make cheating the public easier. The implications are complex and profound."--Joseph E. Stiglitz, Nobel Laureate in Economics

"Phishing for Phools is an intellectual tour de force. It may change your image of the invisible hand into an invisible phoot, always looking to trip you up. Read it for phun; read it for wisdom."--Alan S. Blinder, author of After the Music Stopped: The Financial Crisis, the Response, and the Work Ahead

"A phabulous book! This is economics after the behavioral revolution at its best."--Samuel Bowles, Santa Fe Institute

"Akerlof and Shiller provide a phenomenal guide to the pitfalls of the phree market. This redemptive revision of economic theory explains the built-in risks of rip-offs in a profit-maximizing world."--Nancy Folbre, professor emerita, University of Massachusetts, Amherst

"As Akerlof and Shiller remind us, the same incentives that lead sellers to introduce innovations that improve quality and reduce costs also ensure that no profitable opportunity to cheat us will remain unexploited. This highly readable and insightful book will transform how we think about the role of government."--Robert H. Frank, author of The Economic Naturalist

"Akerlof and Shiller extend the standard 'market failure' theory--which says that there is a potential role for government intervention when markets fail--by showing that markets fail not only because of the familiar reasons of externalities and unfair income distribution, but also because of the pervasive phenomenon of 'phishing for phools' (profit-seeking through manipulation and deception). They point the way to a new paradigm freed from the constraints of market failure theory, able to illuminate 'control by capital' (partly through phishing) and to prescribe for 'control of capital' (partly by techniques for limiting phishing suggested here)."--Robert H. Wade, London School of Economics

"This insightful book exposes a fundamental contradiction in the market system. Consumers and policymakers beware: profit-seeking businesses foster efficiency and innovation, but have strong incentives to manipulate you and sophisticated new data tools allow them to do so in personalized ways."--Laura D'Andrea Tyson, University of California, Berkeley

"This fun but serious book tells how the standard story about free markets often gets it wrong. Indeed, Akerlof and Shiller suggest that we should drop the view of markets as generally benign institutions. The argument is laid out with the help of fascinating anecdotes, the language is conversational, and the book is easy to read. It is addressed to a broad audience, but economists will enjoy it too."--Dani Rodrik, author of The Globalization Paradox

"Phishing for Phools is a coherent and highly plausible explanation of why markets--although usually beneficial--can lead to undesirable outcomes. The book takes an intriguing approach and gives many interesting examples."--Diane Coyle, author of GDP: A Brief but Affectionate History

Phun
By j a haverstick
The publication of this book suffered a few delays and, frankly, I was tempted to cancel my preorder. “Phishing for Phools” (!) not a title to inspire confidence in a serious read. I’m happy I didn’t. By two nobel laureates and published by Princeton. Gotta have something worthwhile. And so it does.

The book is organized into an intro, a main body and a conclusion and all along the authors (who by internal comments seem to have been assembling it for years) tell us where we’ve been and where we’re going. Broadly it falls into that psychology of economics genre we’ve seen so much of the last decade or so. Kahneman’s Thinking Fast and Slow is referenced early on.
The reader will be aware that for, oh, the last couple centuries, there has been a default assumption about economics. There is an identifiable model of organization called Capitalism, which, if properly cultivated, yields the optimal ‘good life’ outcome for all within its venue. It’s based on the totally theoretical (and ridiculous) “theory” of human behavior that left to one’s own devices one will choose what is “best” for oneself and the aggregate of all these choices results in what is best for all. (Even typing this makes me laugh.)
Phishing begins with the report of a trial with Capusin monkeys who totally discredit this worldview. We could add a thousand such experiments and life observations to this example. The authors refer to this as the “monkey on the shoulder” effect. The “rational decider” view of economic activities is still alive in reactionary circles and among the talking heads, but it would be difficult to find anyone who has a brain championing it now. So this book is a report of just what goes wrong when we let the monkey be the decider…which as the authors admit happens to them as well as to those of us whose Nobels are still in the wings...and , in fact, is just part of being a human being.

The authors give an excellent and very readable account of the late meltdown, introducing the evocative term “reputation mining” which is what propped up these tricksters' giant rip-off. That meltdown, tho pretty clear for the initiated, has really taken some time to develop a common narrative. This, I felt provided a good summary, emphasizing the role of the rating agencies and their good old boy relationships with the investment banks. Then we abruptly launch into part two (but preceded with a synopsis of what is to come), a list of case studies of how us phools are phished, by big pharma, tobacco, car dealers, etc. These are organized by category and eye-opening reading even for the cynics (like me) among us. Who would believe that VIOXX caused 26 THOUSAND heart attacks? And, when you think about it, those transaction charges on the plastic are as big as the grocer’s profit margin? Who's payin' for that, and whio's gettin' super rich? (Here's one on me: when I accept a credit card at my restoration bookbinding shop, the 2% is an annoyance; when I use my own card at the local supermarket, that is equivalent to its total profit margin!) Unlike the book’s lead-in, there’s nothing theoretical here, but example after example will leave you with little respect for the classical model and in particular it’s institution in the modern world. To be fair, the authors' retain a lot of respect for the clasical model. Their point is more modest: the pervasive oppurtunities for deception and self-delusion require us to reconsider the New Story (government just gets in the way: think Reagan and his troop) and return to the Old Story (government should serve as a regulator of some economic activities: think almost every 20th cent. president prior to Reagan).

In the concluding chapters the authors give a realistc overview of what they’ve accomplished. They agree that perhaps there’s nothing radically new here. They review some of the pressing issues of the day: Citizens’ United, Social Security “reform” and financial regulation. They recount some battles and heroes. They seem to be optimistic that all is not lost. The reader will have her own hopes and fears. We’re not all teaching at Ivy League schools, which can certainly influence one's optimism quotient. I’m not dissing their, “behavioral economics” as the authors call it, indeed, the basis of that is that there’s a lot the subjectivity of a lot of our judgments. As to the future of this tottering contraption we call American society, we'll see.

There are copious notes, which I admit I consulted only sometimes, but I think they are good and could lead some readers to further reading on this subject.

Most readers will already be members of the choir, but this is a great synopsis of our current predicament. A relaxing weekend read which will provide you with great talking points in your next political conversation.

When Markets Phail
By Great Faulkner's Ghost
Free markets have generated unprecedented prosperity for individuals and societies alike. But, because the authors observe that free markets may also persuade many people to buy things that are good neither for us nor for society, they undercut Adam Smith's notion that the individuals' pursuit of self-interest in free, competitive markets advances the interest of society as a whole. It is this conundrum of free markets that forms the core of George Akerlof and Robert Shiller's engaging new book, Phishing for Phools: The Economics of Manipulation and Deception. A "phool" is anyone who does not fully comprehend the ubiquity of "phishing," the aggressive marketing and often, outright fraud (or example, Bernard Madoff's Ponzi scheme) that has become the reality of today's digital-age financial markets. As too many optimists have learned to their detriment, investing in asset markets is highly complex and fragile, and a whole ocean of phishes has set out to exploit this reality: Borrowers are lured into unsuitable mortgages; financial advisers spin narratives of riches from nowhere; and the media promote extravagant claims.

Ackerlof and Shiller's view (supported by plenty of data) is that rapidly rising prices usually reflect irrational exuberance, aided and abetted by phishing. Their main advice is that the financial authorities need to be prepared to intervene when financial turmoil turns into financial crisis. However, simply by the title, I think they are trying to tell us that we are all "phools" at one time or another, and that we need to be aware of this in making our investment decisions in our 401Ks and in other investing. This strikes me as a timely recapitulation of the wisest financial advice that has ever been given: "a phool and his/her money are soon parted."

Another Phine Mess
By David Wineberg
It seems that the capitalist world is divided into two kinds of people: phishers and phools. Those who phish look for leverage and advantage and milk it; the phools pay for it, even when they don’t need to, don’t want to, and can’t afford to. The result is financial crises, on the national level, the local level and the individual level. And it never stops. We buy too much, we buy the wrong things, and we overpay all the time. Shiller and Akerlof say the very first phool was Eve. The serpent phished her into taking something she did not want, did not need, and which she knew in advance she should not take. The cost was going to be too high. So it has been ever since, whether it’s cable bundles or junk bonds.

There’s a lot going on in this little book. It ranges from individual (struggling) bill payers to government lobbyists, drug marketing and financial services. It is of necessity cursory, and therefore incomplete. In the chapter on credit cards, which treats both merchants and consumers as phools, spending $150 billion annually for the privilege, the authors neglect the fact that to use cash is even worse. While true that credit card users tip more and spend more freely, it is also true stores price in the cost of credit cards and the premiums they give to holders. So paying cash means paying more than we should, making us even bigger phools. Similarly the War on Cancer assumes cancer is internally sourced, making it difficult if not impossible to overcome. That’s because the focus is on treatment. But even the UN says 75% of cancers today are environmental, not genetic; they can be prevented. We can reduce cancer by a whopping 75% by not polluting ourselves, our food, our air, water and soil. The phoolish analysis is leading us to the pill phishers.

“Government is the problem” is a phish for phools, the authors say. It is not only taken out of a very specific context, it diverts attention from the scammers to the government agencies that protect us from the scammers, be they financial, consumer, chemical or environmental. This is diversion and diversion is the number one tool of phishing. The book is an entertaining litany of blatant and subtle examples. Caveat emptor is still the order of the day.

The last word should go to Robert Benchley, who also said the world is divided into two kinds of people: those who divide the world into two kinds of people, and those who don’t.

Magnetic Current, by Edward Leedskalnin

Following is the result of my two years experiment with magnets at Rock Gate, seventeen miles Southwest from Miami, Florida. Between Twenty-fifth and Twenty-sixth Latitude and Eightieth and Eighty-first Longitude West. The earth itself is a great big magnet. Now I will tell you what magnetic current is. Magnetic current is the same as electric current is a wrong expression. Really it is not one current, they are two currents, one current is composed of North Pole individual magnets in concentrated streams and the other is composed of South Pole individual magnets in concentrated streams, and they are running one stream against the other stream in whirling, screwlike fashion, and with high speed. Wilder Publications is a green publisher. All of our books are printed to order. This reduces waste and helps us keep prices low while greatly reducing our impact on the environment.

About the Author

Rating depends on reason for reading
By L. Anderson
I saw a blurb on some scifi show regarding Edward Leedskalnin and his Coral Castle, which prompted me to do more research on the Internet. I was fascinated and curious and I thought I knew what I was getting into when I purchased this book along with "How to Read His Writings" by Marlinski. My complaint is about the reprint and editing of "Magnetic Currents" and not about the content or Ed's writing technique. If you want to try to decode Ed's notebooks, DO NOT BUY THIS VERSION (Reprint by Health Research). They fixed spelling, grammar and did not use the original type fonts - all of which are believed to be clues about his work. They did not use any of the pictures from his original pamphlets, so that part of the puzzle is also missing. I gave it only one star because I could not use it for the reason I purchased it. If you buy this book to learn more about magnetic currents, I'm not sure you'll be too happy, either. Ed is kind of hard to follow, which makes me think there is more to his writing than his words. The Coral Castle website has a Gift Shop where they sell his writings, but I don't know if the booklets are copies of the originals or if they are also selling a "fixed" version.

Difficult to read, but still very interesting
By A Customer
Mr. Leedskalnin's book is difficult to read, but one must consider that English was not his native tongue. According to those who knew him, he was very friendly and extremely intelligent, but also entirely secretive about certain things. For example, he claimed to know how the pyramids were built, and he also stated that he knew the secrets of anti-gravity. Of the latter, at least, he proved it by creating Coral Castle near Homestead, Florida -- in the process he managed to lift numerous up-to-30-ton blocks of coral WITHOUT MODERN MACHINERY. (Now that is a wonder.) Perhaps my fascination with this man colors my opinion of him, but I can overlook his misspelled words, et cetera, when I consider his intelligence. (In my own personal life, I happen to have a younger brother who is dyslexic and blind in one eye -- he can barely spell/write -- but he's also one of the most brilliant people I've ever known.) In any case, anyone thinking of reading or purchasing this book needs to prepare for its difficult style of wording. There will be a great deal of reading and re-reading, plus deciphering to be done.

no good
By Derek Martin
This book doesn't contain ANY of the diagrams Ed created to go with the text. It's impossible to understand without them.

I found a copy of them online, and it helped a LOT.

A complete copy of Ed's writings & diagrams can be obtained by calling the Coral Castle cashier at: 305-248-6345
