About the Author

Susan Norwood is a professor of nursing at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire, where she teaches critical care nursing, professional nursing, ethics, and understanding suffering. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, her master’s degree from Boston College, and her PhD from Union Institute and University in Cincinnati, Ohio. She has been a practicing critical care nurse for over 30 years and a member of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses for nearly as long. She has published and presented in the areas of critical care nursing, nursing ethics, nursing history, suffering experienced by patients as well as health care providers, and conflict among members of the health care team.

A clear, user-friendly nursing statistics book

This was a required textbook for a graduate level nursing statistics course. The text's chapters are organized and provide a comprehensive overview of the different statistical tests. All provided examples are pulled directly from nursing research and are understandable. I found the end of chapter exercises to be helpful but unfortunately, explanations or rational to the answers were not provided in the explanation. While this textbook contributed to my understanding of course content I didn't find it to be a particularly good "reference book" and I don't imagine I'll refer to it again now that the course is over.

This is one of the most user-friendly statistics books I have ever purchased. The information and concepts are easy to understand with multiple examples. The specific subject in each chapter is highlighted for easy locating. There are additional tables in the back that can be used to solve problems. I highly recommend this book.

Beautiful and Timeless Love Story

This story was a very sweet, very engaging, and very emotional story from start to finish! I read this book after reading Madeline Baker's Native American romance novel First Love, Wild Love. First thing's first, both books are great. But this book had more plot threads happening that tied up in a satisfying way than First Love, Wild Love did. I see First Love, Wild Love as a A-to-B love story. But Lakota Love Song was a love story with opening and closings in regards to concepts (Mato's vision) and character arcs (Shaun Randall).

Lakota Love Song is about a young woman named Kaylee who comes across a wounded Lakota warrior named Blue Hawk. She takes him into a nearby shack to dress and clean his wounds, despite the fact that her people and his people are at war. Blue Hawk is intrigued with her, mostly because he saw her once in a vision. When Blue Hawk attacks Kaylee's friend Randy, Blue Hawk threatens the young man's life, making Kaylee promise to return him to his people in exchange for Randy's life. During the time spent with Blue Hawk and the Lakota, Kaylee notices Blue Hawk's kindness and gentleness towards her, and they slowly discover feelings for one another, in the midst of constant strife between their people.

This story definitely had its tedious moments, like the detailed descriptions of the Native American way of life (which is okay in small amounts, but this book decided it wanted to be a textbook for a few pages instead of a novel) and the daily grind of an army recruit. But there were plenty of tender moments, sad moments, and intense moments. And the last quarter of the book was actually very well done! I was worried it would be like the last quarter of First Love, Wild Love, but thankfully it was not! Oh, and beware of repetition. Because this book and First Love, Wild Love are both about a Lakota male lead, the author practically copies and pastes plenty of details from one to the other, such as descriptions of the Black Hills (Paha Sapa), Crazy Horse, and the Sun Dance. That makes parts of the story skimmable. She did sneak a few new things, though, so there's that I guess.....

Would I read this book again? Sure! The love story was sweet and didn't rush itself. There were a lot of memorable moments, so I definitely recommend this to historical romance lovers!

Also...the ending was not something I would have predicted EVER. It's not a twist, but it's an event that almost takes place...scary!

I really loved this book. Not quite a 5 star read for reasons I will later explain.

Tales of native Americans are always heartbreaking for me. There is no happy ending for these people. It breaks my heart how this beautiful race of people were treated, and thrown into virtual extinction.

Don't get me wrong, this book does have a HEA for the h & H romantically but I just felt so depressed about Blue Hawks people, even he knew there was no future for Native Americans.

But anyway..

The first half of the book I liked best. I loved reading about what life was like living with the Lakotas. I was so glad the heroine chose her heart and decided to stay with Blue Hawk and his people (if only for a while).

Their love was beautiful, fated. He just lived and breathed her and she him.

They were both vigins and each others firsts, and I have to say this author deserves a tremendous amount of praise on how she handled it. She did it PERFECTLY. How? By not making a big deal about it. For example, in the first loving scene she says to him.."I've never.." and he says "neither have I.. we will find our way together." PERIOD! He's not a virgin because he was tormented, cold, insane, abused, scarred, an outcast.. nor is he overly religious or pious. He just was a virgin. Why is it that authors nowadays feel that being a male virgin means something is wrong with him. I didn't question it at all. I totally accepted it as a reader. I also LOVED that there is absolutely NO mention of past women. In one instance, Kaylee asked.."did you ever court any women?" his answer.... "no." That was it! I Loved it!!! There was no jealousy of ex girlfriends or other women who wanted him or lusted after him. WELL DONE!!! A breath of fresh air!

There was however a question Kaylee asked Blue Hawk about having multiple wives. She asked if his people have more than one wife. He said yes. And basically it was said he only wanted her, and she said she didn't want to share him. He goes on to explain how she could, if she wanted, have more than one husband (not that he'd want it, it was just an explaination of his people's customs). Needless to say, they only wanted each other.

I started getting anxiety when Kaylee (heroine) thought Blue Hawk was dead and decided to go back home with the army. But fear not! All works out in the end. I wont give out too much, so as to not ruin it for you, but no worries. Trust me.

What brought down the stars for me was a combination of things. First, much of the book has the heroine acting exactly as I would have until about 65%. Until she wanted to go home. I couldn't fault her for wanting to make sure her mother was ok, but part of me was hoping they would stay with his tribe. They didn't. In truth, it was impossible, and the H & h knew that. It would have been a life of constant war for Blue Hawk, and as much as I wanted them to go back to the indians, it could have meant him being killed in a fight. So I guess I really can't lower a star because of this, it was logical for them to stay in the "white world." But I HAD to lower a half a star for how quickly the townspeople changed from lynching Blue Hawk to accepting him. It was too fast. I'm glad it was fast and that they did accept him, but it felt unrealistic. I also felt the heroine whimped out by giving into the sherriff. I wanted them to run off together, back to his tribe after escaping him the first time.

Well.. it all worked out in the end anyway.

On a technical note, the story has lots of wonderful history that is interlaced with the story as to not sound like a history lesson. I loved it but others may not. The pace was slow and steady up until about 90% and then we get slammed with all sorts of emotional issues that literally get resolved by the near end. The conflict was pretty good, mild at times but enough to keep me interested.

The epilogue was ok. I would have rather have had a few more chapters than this summary crammed full of what happened 2 years later. All good things! Happiness, babies.. etc.. but I still left this read with such sorrow about how Kaylee and Blue Hawks children will not be raised in indian fashion. The loss of his culture just weighed heavy on my heart, just as it did for him.
But logically he knew the world was changing and his children would have a better life raised in the white world.

Overall I loved this book, I would definately would recommend and will look into more of this authors work.

Nice, light read

Lakota Love Song is the first of its genre I've ever indulged in, but for the exceptional e-book price ($1.99), I felt adventurous enough to give it a try.

Baker does her homework and it shows in this book as she makes the effort to expose the reader to Lakota culture in a way that's interesting and enlightening. Her character, Blue Hawk, is brave, noble, amiable, and easy to fall in love with.

There was a lull in the middle of the book where the love scenes grew redundant and the pace slowed tremendously, but when you reach the final few chapters you'll feel it was worth the push as the climax will leave you on the edge of your seat until the final page.

I would recommend it for western lovers who are looking for an light, easy romance to read.

Accurate. Insightful. Prophetic to our Times

A first over-the-shoulder glance at this book cover & title and you are wrought with the thought of "Oh No; another in a long list of New Generations. Another lame bandwagon..." In the past fifty years we have seen the whole gamut of "generations" trek their way through the church. The Elijah Generation, The John The Baptist Generation, the Joshua Generation... and the list goes on. The bare reality of it is, we are a generation post-baby-boom that is weary of the hope and the promise of a dynamic global revival that never comes; and tired of just another group laying claim to the name of the generation that brings it.
This book is none of this!

And, this book includes all of this and bares it directly.

It has been man naming the generations just as Jacobs wives named all his children; and God finally says, ENOUGH! I will name the generation; and there will be no more bread until Benjamin appears before me.

Prince delves into the stories of Jacob and Joseph, and with tremendous insight into Old Testament types & shadows which reveal the New Testament concealed in the Old, he draws out Jesus and the fresh Word of the Lord. As one reads he is instantly conveyed past the fog and brighter spots of the past 50 years into the clear and open air and shining son. One becomes aware that this is not just another bandwagon laying claim to our generation which in times past have left us more like Benoni (Sons of Sorrow); and that finally the Father steps in to change the name to Benjamin (Son of my right hand). You will be elevated; not just inspired. Read it! You deserve it!

I love the message by Joseph Prince. THE MESSAGE OF GRACE is what the world is dying to hear.........the gospel not mixed with the law - but through THE ONE WHO CAME to deliver us from darkness into the kingdom of His grace and glory! Don't let fear rob you of the finished work of the cross!

Enlighting

this was very liberating and clear. Anyone that wants to experience the Lords blessings and mercy in a true way in the future needs to read this book.

Worth the price as a set

I bought these 3 books separately over time and the set ended up on my keeper shelf. I preferred two books over the third, but like the continuity of the story line. If you haven't read them yet, this bundle is definitely worth the price since each one is a full-length novel.

Thoroughly obsessed with this series

I started reading the series with Lady Sophia's Christmas Wish which I got free during a seasonal promotion. It was so well written and engaging that I sought out the next book Grace Burrowes had written and found this collection which features the three surviving sons of the Duke and Duchess of Moreland. The concept of "an heir and a spare" was unknown to me before reading these books, but makes sense in securing the succession to the dukedom. In this case, both the heir and the spare died leaving the third son in the position to inherit. All three sons are pressured by their father to marry and have sons of their own, though none of them are willing to marry to fulfill an obligation. Their parents had married for love and the sons wanted that relationship for themselves. How they managed to find wives they loved is at the heart of these stories which have many twists and turns, mysteries and suspense. All the characters are so well developed that I truly cared what happened to them and the dialogue was witty and warm. The books were well edited, a matter I take very seriously, and flowed along carrying me with them. The tension between characters and mystery surrounding each of the women kept me reading late into the night. I even found myself speaking with the rhythm and vocabulary of the characters when I wasn't reading! I've continued following the members of this family through several other books of the series and dread reading the last one because I know I will miss them. Fortunately there were ten children so I have several more books to read. I would recommend this series to anyone.

Compelling characters, well-developed relationships

I had these books on my Kindle for a while before I started reading them. And once I started, I couldn't stop. The three stories are about three brothers - and the relationships between the brothers was so sweet and tender that it made me really love them all. The female characters were strong and interesting. At times, I found myself frustrated with the characters' hesitations to embrace love, but as with all romance novels, it ended happily ever after for all of them. Highly recommended.

Imaginative Sci-Fi with an Action Packed Plot

The imagination in this book is phenomenal. The trains, the travel, the monk bugs, the angels, the Guardians, the absolute everything! This book is full of wonders in the same way I’d expect from a fantasy novel, except this is science fiction and also packed with tech, fast-paced action and a handful of characters whose adventures suck you in from the first page and leave you helpless to put it down, like some poor railhead stuck riding the K-Bahn’s forever after.

Zen is not much of a hero - or, rather, he's not very heroic. He’s a thief, he’s also selfish, self-absorbed and doesn’t really care about anyone except himself. He has a very hardworking older sister and a mother prone to outbreaks of paranoia that saw Zen running from place to place throughout his childhood. He doesn’t think much of his home life and he isn’t fond of his home world, a run down dump at the end of a branch line. The only thing he really likes are the K-trains, great locomotives that can travel vast distances across the galaxy using the K-Bahn gates that somehow pass out of time to skip from one planet to another, countless light years away.

He has no ambitions, no real future, no plans to do anything but keep on thieving for the rest of his life, until Raven finds him and gives him a special mission.

It’s hard not to like Zen, even though he’s not particularly honorable or good. But he is interesting as he tries to work out what Raven really wants, while making unexpected friends with Nova and exploring the unimaginably rich world of the Imperial Noon family. I loved seeing the galaxy through Zen’s eyes, because despite everything he’s not jaded or bored, instead he still recognizes wonder when he sees it and knows how to appreciate it. I completely understood his enthusiasm for the locos and the excitement of arriving on new worlds, especially the forgotten ones along the Dog Star Line.

I loved the trains, the sentient locos that are the only things capable of passing through the gates. They each have distinct personalities and stories of their own, especially the sinister Thought Fox. I also really liked the friends Zen encounters on the way, particularly Nova and Flex. Those two added a new dimension to Zen’s world and taught him the most about looking beyond himself, even if he will never be entirely heroic.

The plot moves swiftly, unfolding relevant information only when needed and steadily gathering pace. There were plenty of times when I didn’t have a clue where it was all going to end, and there are plenty of dark surprises amongst the imaginative wonders. The ending itself left me wanting so much more – not least a K-train of my own to explore the galaxy with.

If you’re looking for something overflowing with imagination, full of intriguing characters and a fast-paced, absorbing plot, then this book delivers all of that and more. Which is just what I’d expect from Philip Reeve. Clever and exciting, the only bad thing about it all is that it had to end. I really hope this isn’t the last I’ll see of this amazing galaxy.

Imaginative

Railheads, station angels, taggers, and sentient trains all vibrate with life in the plausible future universe that Philip Reeve has created in Railhead. There are touches of mathematics and science that add credibility, as Isaac Asimov did decades ago. And there is a charming, rakish energy that is reminiscent of Douglas Adams' work. But make no mistake, Reeve's imagination and the world he crafts are quite singular.

The story begins with young Zen Starling's version of normal. It is different than ours in the 21st century, but similar enough to be comprehensible. Reeve slowly accretes layers of detail, easing us into his world in a way that slowly stretches our comprehension and understanding. He also is adept at imbuing characters with distinct traits and personalities that make the events that are unfolding pretty credible because we've become invested in the fate of his characters and are actively involved in trying to predict just where Reeve is taking us.

I'm anti-spoiler, so this next will be a little vague. But I cannot write this without taking some time to discuss the genius that is Reeve's imagining of the trains. They are wonderful, awe-inspiring, and quite breathtaking -- the trains your heart and mind team up to imagine when you visit rolling stock reposing on sections of rail in the summer sun, with rust and patina burnished by time. Reeve’s brief paeans to trains make me wonder whether he rode the rails and whether railsong entered his youthful dreams.

Overall, plot, pacing, characters, and dialogue all were finely balanced. There was one section midway through the book that dragged a bit. Perhaps it was a purposeful diversion to make the next big plot point more impactful, and was just rather drawn out for my taste. Otherwise, this book was a pleasure, beginning to end, and leaving the world of those magnificent trains and re-entering 2016 was somewhat jolting.

4.5 stars, rounded up to 5 largely for language and the thought that went into the trains.
