The Iconic Artist

This book is big, perfect coffee table book. It covers the life and works of Tim Bradstreet, who's iconic photo-realism grindhouse art style has graced the covers of Vampire the Masquerade, Shadowrun, Hellblazer, Punisher and even some of the Blade movies. Bradstreets style is unique and dark, but has a believable and achingly real quality to it.

Amazing portfolio for an artist in total control of his craft

[[VIDEOID:34305931]]Archetype is a thick hardcover art book that doesn't disappoint, all 312 pages of it. This is the second collection of his artwork, the first art book was called Maximum Black. Desperado has done a terrific job publishing the book. It's well bind, with the art brilliantly reproduced on low gloss high quality art paper.

The book collects over two decades of work, from Shadowrun, Vampire: The Masquerade, The Punisher, Hellblazer, Criminal Macabre, rejected illustrations, freelance commissions to unpublished personal projects like "Red Sky Diary". There are just too many to name. Each piece is captioned by Tim Bradstreet himself talking about the background. That's plenty of good read in addition to his illustrating career which is included right at the start.

The technical drawing ability showcased is amazing. His portfolio is impressive. The photo-realistic portraits, subtle lighting, and fine use of black just makes every illustration screaming for attention. For me, it's mostly the photo-realistic figure drawings that really blew my mind.

I'm sure he used reference, for the book also included several reference photos. But some (a few of my friends actually) might take issue with this method of creating art, which traces over and applies their own style.

If you can accept this kind of art creation, then this art book is well worth the money and I highly recommend it.

Nature Revealed, Close to Home

This beautiful little book is a labor of love by a gifted New Hampshire poet, photographer and graphic designer, a rich melding of poems and photos that feed off each other, photos a la Eliot Porter, poems a la Mary Oliver - nature revealed, close to home, personally, vividly, all with passages opening into higher meanings, spiritual kicks. Here's one of my favorites (and you should see its photo twin!):

GREEN WATER
sun rich light, through
leaves above this brook,
drops glowing green
into the water
moving surely
through my woods,
nothing murky,
this is crystal
over pebbled granite,
drawing with it
memory and flavors
held by silt
and wood orts, shed,
by gently rotting windfalls
the water of this moment
leaves us, on its way
to pond, then stream and river
with its story, bringing news
of seasons past
and momentary glories
as it joins
the greater flow.

In the overflow of words that one is bombarded with by daily life and social media, sometimes it is hard to hear the ones that really count. Poet Rantilla has managed to use just the right number of words to convey the depth and breadth of her feelings about the life experience. I was not expecting the third and fourth readings of each of these poems to make them start to feel like old familiar rocks on a beach landscape- steadfastly resolute- season after season but maybe a little altertered by the passing of time and weather. Well Done!

Jan Middendorp has compiled a very useful new guide to the world of fonts, beginning with a brief overview of fonts (typeset oddly in all red Times New Roman) and some of the large companies that produce and distribute them. However, the vast majority of the book is devoted to detailed profiles of over 50 independent foundries, showing some of their better-known font designs in full showings, including type-color samples in a range of weights and point sizes. This was a gift for my son, he loves it. I looked through the book and found it to be very beautifully laid out and very interesting. I am not a graphic designer but could still appreciate the artistic value of this book. Would definitely recommend it.

An Oldy, but a Goody!

This book is one of the Bibles of the Transactional Analysis school of social psychology/psychiatry. The other "Bible" is I'm OK -- You're OK by Thomas A. Harris, M.D.

Before reading Games People Play, it is a good idea to read I'm OK - You're OK. There are two reasons why. First, I'm OK is a general introduction to Transactional Analysis whereas Games People Play deals with a narrow aspect of the subject. Second, I'm OK is written in an easier style than the present book. In fact, if I hadn't already studied I'M OK, I might not have understood Games People Play.

The author of Games People Play was the founder of the TA school. The author of the other book was his follower. Transactional Analysis was popular during the 1960s and 1970s. Since then, it has lost some of that popularity in America, although it still seems to be going strong in Australia. The society founded by Dr. Berne still exists in this country, today.

Before investing in a copy of the book, you might want to check Wikipedia which has an excellent article about Tranactional Analysis. Games, the subject of this book, are special behaviors that people use to accomplish ulterior designs. For example, the game called "If it Weren't for You I'd...." helps people feel better about NOT doing things they are really afraid to do.

I believe this book and the school of Transactional Analysis are worthwhile for everyone who wants to understand human nature.

Knowing when you are manipulated by others will lighten your life burdens!

I remember buying this book when it hit the market, and now I'm buying it for others in my family to read. I'm sixty now so I've had plenty of time to see lots of games and manipulation, some of which I got pretty good at myself. No blame or shame involved. Most families pass down their learned ways of coping to the next generation so this stuff has always been going on. As I age I am very much less interested in other's games or even my own. Victims, tears, blame, "you caused my problems" I just leave to their owners. Life is too full of fun to be manipulated or guilt-tripped by anyone, and I do believe in total responsibility for my life and what happens in it. Read this and forgive yourself for your games and unplug from other's attempts to control you by any means they can. This book is one of my favorites! Recommended reading for those in the pangs of guilt from anyone, even parents or children.

Geared towards professionals more than laypersons

I was a little disappointed in this book. After reading "I'm OK-You're OK" by T. Harris, I thought this was the natural next book to read. While there is plenty of useful insight in this book, it's not as applicable as I had hoped. Only 1 or 2 games have a full analysis. Most of them aren't even really explained in detail. The author gives maybe 1 sentence and then goes off on tangents. Some of the games aren't even fully proven to be games, in my opinion. Just really unhealthy pastimes. I'm sure there are better Game Analysis resources out there. For now I think Transactional Analysis and Structural Analysis are more applicable for improving the quality of one's interactions.

An advanced book for the plasticity continuum mechanics

I find it a great book, however the reader must have some knowledge on basic/advanced plasticity topics despite its introductory chapters. Chapters 5,6 and 7 are precious describing recents theories in flow laws, hardening rules, viscoplasticity and damage mechanics.
