Excellent insight into the world of the Corporate Entrepreneur

The author comes from a long heritage of corporate entrepreneurship (i.e., those people who start and grow very successful businesses from *within* companies rather than from scratch). Over the past several years she has been able to help deepen our understanding of who these critical people are, how they're wired together, and most importantly how can such people effectively "spread their wings" in much larger organizations in ways that propels to whole enterprise forward.

In the end, these are the people that you may not necessarily want managing a highly mature, steady-state business (and I thought that at one time about the now bankrupt Hostess Corporation!), but they are equally critical for the future of the whole enterprise. Ms. Foley provides both a framework and an highly effective assessment tool called the "Corporate Entrepreneurial Profile", which is very helpful in enabling the reader to determine where they fit in all this. This reviewer speaks from experience, having taken the survey in the past and found it an important guidepost to help navigate through his own corporate entrepreneurial journeys.

As an Internal entrepreneur, I found Acceleration to be very insightful and to the point in what it takes to build and grow within an organization. The Vision and Mission need to be clear and consistent. Susan is spot on in her approach and direction in building an environment that fosters creativity and allows for incubation groups to spawn new growth opportunities. Even when we have divisions that are growing, we open doors to individuals that want to and have the ability to step aside from the status quo and try new lines of business, new markets, new opportunities. As part of a larger operation, without attempts at new opportunities and developing staff to take on those roles, we would not be the company we are today.

Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) Tutorial, Siemens Simatic S7-200
This book gives good basic programming examples using Ladder Logic on the Siemens S7-200 PLC. Programming instructions covered are: contacts, coils, timers, counters, shift, rotate, FirstIn FirstOut tables.
Each project is clearly explained and the ladder logic includes thorough network comments. Each project also includes a wiring diagram to show the inputs and outputs. This is a good starting text to learn the functions available on the Siemens S7-200 and how to apply them.

Not very good for newbies

The book is based in examples and cover a wide range of typical application but if you are really new at the use of S7/200 you will not be able to do much, also I wish there was a list of commands because I could not find the specific information I was looking for. Other way is good as a general introduction to the s7/200.

An excellent introduction to the world of fine coffee

My college-age sons tell me that what I call "coffee" isn't coffee. Understand, I started drinking the stuff over a half century ago, before the age of twelve. Most of what I drank was either instant or poured from pots on hot plates at diners, convenience stores, and office kitchenettes. I now grind my own beans and brew my daily pot of coffee with an electric drip coffee-maker. My sons still make fun of my plebeian tastes. They tell me that there's a whole 'nother world of coffee out there.

THE WORLD ATLAS OF COFFEE serves as a tremendous introduction to that brave new world of specialty coffee. There are three parts. Part One covers such things as the coffee tree, the coffee fruit, harvesting and processing coffee, and how coffee is traded. Part Two is "From Bean to Cup": coffee roasting, buying and storing coffee, alternative brewing approaches and equipment (including French Press, "pour-over" brewing, the Aeropress, and the stove-top moka pot), and espresso. Part Three is the Atlas part: entries for the many different countries in the world where coffee is grown, and for each a brief discussion of history and different growing regions, taste profiles, and (usually) information on "traceability".

The presentation is excellent. The level of specificity is about seven on a scale of ten: there is a fair amount of detail, but not so much as to overwhelm the non-expert reader. (Still, my guess is that my sons, who like to think of themselves as experts, will learn a thing or two from the book when they get home for the holidays.) The writing is lucid. And there are numerous, vivid color photographs. To repeat, the book is an excellent introduction to the world of fine coffee. Plus, I suspect that most coffee enthusiasts will not need or want additional information.

Classic Inspirational Self-Help

Disclaimer: I received a free copy in the mail, and am receiving no other compensation. I had previously bought my own copy before the ARC arrived.

For years, I had a thin copy of Rilke's poems (in German) tucked into that outside pocket of my briefcase. Anytime I got stuck somewhere, had to wait in a long line, or just felt like brushing up on my college lit major, I would pull it out.

Well, now I am going to replace it for good.

As of today, Do Less, Be More will take its place.

Why?

I am 52 years old this year (2013). Need to run a good second half. This book will help me focus.
I've already read it and marked it up with a red pen, so just reading a few pages here or there (I'll leave a little post-it to mark my place) will bring me back to those "life centering" ideas.
The small size is perfect.
This book his Busacker's book, but it is also your book. Many times between the covers you and I are asked to do a little (fun) inventory. We craft the conclusions together with the author.

Do Less, Be More gets right to the heart of the matter. Most books are really pamphlets bloated into a book. This is just a thick pamphlet that doesn't need the extra pages. It's lean and mean.

My grandfather came of age in the depression and clawed his way to a professional career with the assistance of the self-help classics of that era. He would share them with me on Tuesday mornings at Denny's while I was in college. Dale Carnegie. Napoleon Hill. And many others. The giants.

This (humble little) book belongs in that company.

My favorite part was the "Calling Cards" exercise on page 80. I've read a lot of helpful things over the years. This exercise is up there with them. Simple. Fun. Enlightening.

The only thing I would change is that I would have liked to have heard a little more from John himself about struggles and victories in his own life.

Get the book. Get a copy for everyone you know for Christmas. Heck, it's small and simple to mail.

The size of the book masks the power of following this advice. Jim Collins approach of Good to great advises help with what not to do but John's book would be great way to discern and make the changes it requires to Stop doing.
But in addition Johns book reflects a sense of Grace at the heart of things that engages more than my will power.
The Spiritual dimension of life and practical blend in this books energy and effectiveness. For me that's what took me from a head knowledge of what I need to do into actually doing less and finding more life. I recommend it.

Great book and he has others

Finding a book this great renews my faith in humanity. One sign of an excellent book is a great bibliography, this one is such a one, it is divided into books, articles, reports and websites -- as few are but as all should be. Not a lot of books but they are all excellent books, same for the rest of the bibliography. Cockett is a pro. Here is a review from Foreign Affairs:

“Cockett, a former correspondent for The Economist, has traveled to every corner of Myanmar (also known as Burma) to uncover the roots of its troubled condition. The Burmans, the majority ethnic group (who are mostly Buddhist), live on the country’s central plain. They are surrounded by a horseshoe-shaped ring of “hill tribes,” many of which are Christian and which are classified into 135 officially recognized ethnic groups. This picture is further complicated by the legacies of the British colonial period, when the country experienced an influx of Hindus and Muslims from various parts of India, as well as Chinese merchants, Iraqi Jews, and others seeking commercial opportunities. Faced with so much ethnic and religious diversity, postindependence military regimes tried to “purify” the country through assimilationist education and language policies, exclusionary citizenship laws, and a military-dominated economic model, all of which have only exacerbated divisions. Cockett’s lucid analysis of these complexities makes clear his affection for the country. But he evinces little hope that the current quasi-military regime or the opposition can overcome these conflicts and make Myanmar anything more than a “stunted democracy.”

A Good Summary of Burma Past & Present

The book, which is organized into two sections, provides an interesting portrait of Burmese history and current events.

In the first section, Burma’s history is told through the lens of the “plural society.” In a plural society people mix but do not combine; they have their own culture, language, religion, etc. As individuals they meet only in the marketplace to buy and sell.

The author argues that the British created a pluralistic society in Burma by encouraging the immigration of non-Buddhist’s from other parts of the empire. His contention is that this and other colonial / pre world war II policies continues to contribute to Burma’s current problems. While I think that here is some truth to this, I thought the point was taken too far. At times the story became a bit tedious to read as the author digressed to tie one of Burma’s current problems back to the concept of pluralism and British imperialism.

The second section of the book deals with more recent events. It summarizes the rise of the National League for Democracy, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, and the transition to a relatively less repressive government led by Thein Sein. It unfortunately ends before the December 2015 election. To me, this section of the book was the most interesting as it described Burma’s problems in a more international and contemporary context. I thought that the authors use of first person accounts of the historic oppression and current political climate gave a unique perspective on the country.

I found the book to be a good and interesting read and recommend it to those interested in Burma or southeast Asian history & current events.

Nicely written and well argued book. I was looking for a book that would give me a good understanding of the current issues facing contemporary Burma and found it in this book. Highly recommended.
