This book is an exaltation of courage and human endurance, a page-turner that traces the steps of two children fleeing across northern France, during the early 1940s, in what truly can be described as the worst of times. As uplifting as the girl's tale of personal survival is the story of those who helped them, the story of a bond between people of different religious and ethnic backgrounds who shared the common ground of their humanity.

From the Author
I began to write "Good-bye for Always, The Triumph of the Innocents" in 1993. After meeting Cecile Kaufer in the winter of 1990-91, I spent more than three years discussing the historical implications of her story and the reasons why it was an important one to tell. It had been almost 50 years since the events in and around Paris and she was still unable to share the story even with her children.

After endless hours of discussion, Cecile began to feel more comfortable with discussing her experiences with me. In time, she sat her children and grandchildren down and told them what had happened to her. With some basic training and coaching, she began to be comfortable with talking about it to groups. One group, in particular, was the temple her daughter's family belonged to. For the first time, this audience contained a member of her family -- her granddaughter -- named after the beloved mother she had lost.

While these sessions made Cecile more comfortable with speaking in front of groups, she now felt that she wanted it to be chronicled in book form. She had written notes, journals, diaries and poems but had no vehicle to give her family the immortality she felt they were owed. At that point, she and I started speaking in earnest about doing the book. I advised her of the difficult emotional task ahead of her as we sought to bring her family to life. Through the pages of the book, everyone would see her beloved mother, father, sister, grandparents and others in ways she had kept hidden for years. I knew it would stir a great deal of pain inside her and, to her credit, her mission of wanting this story told was strong enough to overcome the pain.

I decided to do the project for several reasons. One, it is an extremely compelling story. It is exciting, touching, dramatic, suspenseful -- and true. Second, as a Jew myself, I believe strongly in passing our knowledge and insight to the next generation. It is my responsibility as an adult to help convey to those who follow what has happened in my time. Third, I felt a strong responsibility to this woman, who had endured so much and who had entrusted me with her inner-most feelings. More than anything else in the world, she wanted to do this so that the story of her family would live forever. She gave me the information I needed to tell the story and my commitment to her was so strong that I agreed to be the storyteller.

It is an excellent book, well worth the read

I recently read Sarah's Key which is a fictional account of the 1942 Paris roundups and deportations of thousands of Jews who were arrested, held at the V�lodrome d'Hiver, then transported to Auschwitz. I became very interested in finding out more so in my search for more information I found this book which is a true story. It is an excellent book, well worth the read.

This is the kind of book that will keep you reading

In this book Cecile wrote about the horrors of World War 2. She was only 11 when nazis invaded her home,her town,her country,and many others. She was a very heroic young girl who lost her parents and older sister. But had to try to keep her and 6 year old sister alive. This book made me appreciate all the things I have that she lost. It was a sad book that keeps you reading.

This book is a well written, easy to read, account of two little girl's experiences during WWII and their struggle to survive the Nazi occupation of France. Because it is written through the eyes of the girls as children, it is not laden with a lot of adult scenes that are often painful to read when studying written works of the Holocaust. Even so, its story is poingnant and leaves a lasting impression. Cecile's parents and their love live forever in this book. I highly recommend this book. I plan to include this book as part of required reading for history in my son's homeschooling program.

Marrin does it again!

Albert Marrin should have stayed in junior high as a teacher. That way maybe we would have a lot more history lovers in America! Since he chose another career path, I am very happy that he continues to write for young people (now more kids can learn to love history!).
As usual, Marrin does an excellent job not only of presenting an memorable character, but explaining the events surrounding his life. I would not recommend this book for younger than at least 7th or 8th grade, but I would recommend it even for adults who want a readable, clear explanation of Old Hickory and his times! Thanks again Mr. Marrin!

What happened, Professor Marrin?

This is the tenth book I have read and purchased written by Professor Marrin. I initially came across him while writing my senior thesis for college and I have been impressed with his writing ever since...until now. Perhaps my disappointment comes from the reality that I have only read his older books, whereas this one was written in 2006; perhaps with time the author has become more "progressive" and revisionist in his writing. Besides the obvious inaccuracies (Marrin writes that the Act of Union between Scotland and England occurred in 1607 when it was 1707. Marrin writes that the 3/5 Clause in the Constitution placed the value of a black person at 3/5 a human being, a typical revisionist idea. Even a superficial knowledge of the Constitution causes one to understand that only 3/5 of blacks were counted as a WHOLE, not as an individual), Marrin also takes "potshots" at whites in general. When he mentions that Jackson had a black female slave, he subtlety attempts to interject that "they may have been sex partners," but then never gives any proof and never even mentions the relationship again. In a former book Professor Marrin wrote, "Struggle for a Continent: The French and Indian Wars, 1690-1760," he describes the brutality of both native people and whites. In this book, all the brutality seems to be on the part of whites, who, Professor Marrin would have you believe, wanted nothing more than to kill every native person in the continent. I will freely admit that I haven't finished reading the book, but I cannot expect that the liberal, revisionist tone of the rest of the book will be any different. I will continue to buy Professor Marrin's books, but only if they precede the printing of this one. I don't read history for fiction; I read it to learn the truth. You will not find it in this book. Certainly, I don't agree with much of what President Jackson did, but he deserves better treatment than this. I truly hope that the author returns to the quality of his previous works with their obvious lack of bias.

Thoughtful and ultimately moving romance.

This is the first book I've read by Molly O'Keefe and it won't be the last. Historical romance is my favourite subgenre but I'm increasingly jaded by the kind of anachronistic, indifferently written and not very emotionally involving books that proliferate these days. This book has a grittiness and pragmatism that felt very refreshing, but it had moments that touched me too.

The wounded war hero is a historical romance staple but this book portrays the lingering effects of the Civil War on everyone who went through it, in a way that feels realistic. Melody's determination to settle for comfort rather than risking heartbreak is understandable and Cole's insistence on a genuinely loving relationship after all the grief in his past makes him a very appealing hero. I loved the fact that these two don't immediately lust after each other; Cole admires Melody's sometimes unfeminine strength and she is charmed by Cole's ability to nurture seeds into plants, and the way he steadily goes about building for the future.

These are thoughtful characters who reflect on how the war has changed them and what they now want from their lives. They are both aware of how they are helping each other to emerge from traumatic experiences. There is a sense of historical time and place in this book that comes not from historical details but from the attitudes and emotions of the characters.

This book isn't perfect; some of the early actions of Melody and her sister in the face of her husband's brutality don't make much sense, and I ultimately became impatient with Melody's stubborn scorn for Cole's romantic dreams. But as I kept reading I kept wishing that more historical romance was like this, with characters who are shaped by their time and who deserve their happy ending. I'll be checking out the next book in this series, for sure.

Emotional historical romance

I love historical romances, but I have never read one in quite this style. Molly O'Keefe builds this story and romance around the very specific loss and grief and numbness that affected the country and the pain specific to these people. The setting is described sparsely, but the images are clear and memorable because they are filtered through emotion. A very new and fresh sort of historical writing to me, and I enjoyed it very much.

Being a poor woman in the Old West did suck, actually. Recommended romance.

This was hard for me to read at first because of what the woman experiences and thinks of it, though it's accurate for the time period. But the evolution of both main characters is believable and compelling, and I loved that it ends where they really begin, rather than your classic Happily Ever After, because it fits the characters perfectly. Recommended.

thought-provoking and easy to read

I bought this book because it seemed to get to ideas I've been using in my latest painting project. Turkle gives a very nice and brief introduction to how she became interested in objects as a path to philosophy and ways of thinking about the world. The vignettes are rather random and I think quite beautiful. This is not a book that will have a great final point. It meanders and allows you to make associations and hopefully draw some conclusions about your own life and the objects in it. I also like that the book itself is a wonderful object. About the size of a hymnal or some other type of book meant to be held and easy to carry around. A very nice book as a gift for someone who has too many things!

"Evocative Objects" -- insightful and absorbing

This book is a gem. In this collection of essays, the authors reflect on how a seemingly simple object - a rolling pin, a train, a pair of ballet slippers - can serve as an emotional marker and play a powerful role in understanding relationships, life transitions and loss. I'll recommend this book to my book group because it should prompt a lively discussion about the evocative objects of the members.

It's a mistake to believe that things are "just" things

This is an unexpectedly delightful yet seriously thoughtful book that invites you reexamine your relationship to objects, about which, you seldom, if ever think.

It's a collection of essays written by humanists, designers, scientists and artists--thoughtful individuals--that disclose the fluidity and complexity of being alive by revealing their very personal relationships with objects as mundane as a rolling pin and as banal as comic book superheroes.

Each essay is paired with writings from philosophy, history, literature and theory which resonate with the essay in ways that illuminate both what the essayist is saying and what he or she means.

Each essay, in a very different way, demonstrates why it is a mistake to assume that objects are nothing more than inanimate collections of atoms and molecules. They show instead that objects can be and often are capable of evoking potent emotional responses dealing with grief, fear, loss, love, hatred, abandonment, intellectual curiosity, poverty and existence.

From the essay MURRAY: THE STUFFED BUNNY

Before the essay the paired writing offers this: "To get to the idea of playing it is helpful to think of the preoccupation that characterizes the playing of a young child. The content does not matter. What matters is the near withdrawal state, akin to the concentration of older children and adults. The playing child inhabits an area that cannot be easily left, nor can it easily admit intrusions. This area of playing is not inner psychic reality. It is outside the individual but it is not the external world. Into this play area the child gathers objects or some sample derived from inner or personal reality...[Thus] in playing, the child manipulates external phenomena with dream meaning and feeling [And] there is a direct development from transitional phenomena to playing, and from playing to shared playing, and from this to cultural experiences." --D. W. Winnicott, Playing and Reality

The essay is about the experiences of a little girl with an actual stuffed bunny and explores how, at first, she finds it no different from "the rest of the pastel objects" of her world. As you follow the story you learn how the little girl (the author's sister) develops the idea that a she can love a bunny.

Next you come to understand how she deals with the separation anxiety associated with the realization that when she begins nursery school she won't be able to take Murray with her. Later you learn how the little girl infuses Murray with a life of his own in a utopian setting with provinces and capitals and a complicated topography. And finally the author reveals this about Murray: "...he has given me a ringside seat at the performance of Shayna's imagination, even as I remind myself that in fact it was she, as his creator who bought me the ticket to that seat."

This book will make you laugh and cry, say WHAT(?) and oh yeah, I know exactly what that feels like. I found reading it like riding an intellectual rollercoaster that forced me to reexamine not only objects but my relationship with and to them.

The book begins and ends with an essay by Sherry Turkle which adds to the reading experience and further illuminates how and why objects, can and do become powerfully evocative.

I recommend this book without reservation.

Hot BDSM Heartfelt Romance

Amanda's Dominant Daddy is a spicy contemporary romance with a BDSM theme, specifically a Daddy Dom/little girl dynamic.

At her exclusive gym, Amanda, a movie studio executive, meets Braxton, a handsome actor. For months she ignores his attempts to flirt with her, finally reluctantly agreeing to join him for coffee. But she bails on him, only to end up having dinner with him later that night.

When he helps her navigate a problem with her car she realizes that having someone to talk care of her is a nice thing. Opening up to Braxton, Amanda discovers a part of herself she didn't know existed, a little girl looking for a daddy to be in control.

I absolutely loved this book. Maggie Carpenter handles the DD/lg storyline with authority and tenderness. The plot is engaging and I found myself rooting for Amanda and Braxton. And she brings the sexy and the kink! Great book!

I was given a copy of this book through a Review Group I belong to, for an open and honest review.

This is my second read by Maggie Carpenter and I was not disappointed. :) Another great story that was read in one sitting.

As the title say’s, this is about Amanda Anderson. A business woman in the entertainment industry of Hollywood. She’s a tough no nonsense lady, not opposed to throwing the odd tantrum to get her way or having those she meets, caving in for the peace under her manipulation. :)

While attending a gym, she notices Braxton Carter. A younger, handsome and talented actor. He too has noticed her as each ponders what it would be like to be with the other. Braxton makes the first move inviting Amanda for a coffee, that quickly becomes a bit of disaster! :)

They do eventually meet later that day, where she apologizes and is soon making them both dinner after an accident with her car. They talk and after a kiss, Amanda knows she wants more. Needless to say, she soon learns it does not pay to have a tantrum around or with Braxton. :)

He dishes out her punishment, treating her like the child she has behaved as. Giving Amanda a small taste of the BDSM lifestyle Braxton enjoys. Amanda soon opens up to Braxton about her past, that has in many ways led to how she is with people. Braxton is not put off and uses it as their relationship develops and deepens.

There is the misunderstanding that has her in tears and wishing she’d never met him. But with the ‘lovely’ Jeremy; her amazing assistant, they get it all sorted with some clever trickery. I loved this new book of Maggie’s, to read and was often chuckling away at the banter between the characters. Even close to tears with Amanda, but glad Jeremy came to the rescue. :)

It’s a great story and can’t wait to read more of Maggie Carpenter’s books. Thank you for a fun, quick read; for me. :)

Romantic and Sizzling Hot

Tough and independent show biz executive Amanda, has seen a hot young actor, Braxton, watching her at the gym. She’s totally attracted to him, but so are all the girls, and they are young and sexy and she can’t imagine why a guy like Braxton would have any interest in her. When he runs into her at the juice bar he talks her into at least having a cup of coffee with him, but when she meets up with him in the parking lot she has a sudden panic attack, and thinks any chance of relationship is impossible, so why waste time and have coffee with him? She blows him off, and immediately regrets it. Later that night she runs into him in a restaurant and after her car is involved in an accident, he steps up and takes control of the situation, eventually driving her home. She ends up inviting him in for dinner, and he kisses her. The sparks fly. She lives in a big home in Beverly Hills, and has been hearing scary noises in her house late at night, so the next day she invites him over to see if he has any ideas about what it could be. The book had gripped me up to this point, but this is where things really start to take off. The love and attraction between these two is awesome, and the way he handles her…it’s just perfect. The scenes where he takes control as her daddy are super sweet but also sexy. This book gets a huge thumbs-up five star from me.

I won't waste away...

This play is a beautiful addition to humankind's literature. Annie Baker, a Pulitzer-prize winning playwright, has fashioned a play about isolation, kindness and respect, out of airy nothing. It is a fine work.

Lovely, subtle play

Annie Baker understands that smaller can be bigger. The seemingly slight premise deepens and deepens as the play goes, and by the end, I was thunderstruck. Kudos to Ms. Baker.
